Planting forests - an investment in the future
Planting new forests is one of the most important measures to counteract the effects of climate change, promote biodiversity and secure valuable ecosystem services. But planting trees is far more than just putting seedlings in the ground - it is a complex process that requires careful planning and professional implementation.
What does it take to plant a forest?
For a new forest to grow successfully, it takes more than just the trees themselves. Important elements of successful reforestation are
- Preparation of the area: the area must be carefully prepared so that the seedlings find optimal conditions; this includes, for example, clearing the planting area.
- Trained personnel: Expert foresters and forest managers are crucial for planning the planting and then planting and caring for the seedlings professionally.
- Wildlife browsing protection: Young trees are susceptible to browsing by wild animals. Protective measures such as fences or special protective devices around the seedlings are therefore essential.
Maintenance: In the first few years, the area must be mowed regularly to protect the young trees from overgrowth by grasses or competing plants. On average, this is done 1-3 times a year until the plants are large enough not to be endangered by competing vegetation. From then on, the crop is considered secure.
How many trees are planted per hectare?
The number of trees planted per hectare depends on the aim of the reforestation, the tree species and the planting method. It usually makes sense to plant between 2,000 and 7,000 trees per hectare, which corresponds to 10,000 m². A denser planting increases the stability and biodiversity of the forest, but also requires higher investments.
What does it cost to plant a forest?
The cost of planting a hectare of forest varies depending on the type of tree, site conditions and the necessary protective measures. On average, the costs amount to €15,000 to €25,000 per hectare.
Individual cost factors:
Seedling and planting: Depending on the tree species and quality, planting a tree costs between €2 and €4 on average.
Site preparation: Varies depending on the initial condition of the site.
Protective measures: Browsing protection and maintenance of the area are also major, often underestimated cost factors.
Why is it important to plant forests?
Planting new forests is a long-term investment in the future. Forests make an invaluable contribution to climate protection by sequestering carbon, producing oxygen and regulating the water balance. They provide a habitat for countless animal and plant species and help to stabilize our ecosystems.
Every newly planted tree helps to shape the forests of tomorrow - forests that are resilient to the challenges of climate change and serve as the basis of life for us all.
